Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. (James 1:27 NIV)

Pure and faultless religion, the lifestyle of those who bring glory to God, involves caring for those who are in distress. In the narrow sense, it includes children who have lost their parents and women who have lost their husbands. However, the distress of orphans and widows also afflict those who are spiritual orphans and widows. This could in include those of any age and either gender who are missing a spiritual parent or a spiritual companion. In this broader sense, this would include those who are missing pastors, elders, teachers, mentors, and friends. It would also include men and women who are single or divorced and those whose parents or partners are uncommitted, emotionally disconnected, or absent from the home due to incarceration, the military, business, hobbies, or even ministry. It especially includes the elderly, the disabled, women, and children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected.
